airplaneDo you have a trip coming up? You are going to have to re-think how you pack your e-cigarette if you plan on flying within the United States.

As part of U.S. federal authority’s crackdown on dangerous items on flights, e-cigarettes are now banned from your checked baggage. This is the latest in a string of rule changes involving e-cigarettes on flights as a result of the potential fire risk. Dating back to June, airlines around the world have begun to ban the packing of e-cigarettes in checked luggage.

“The International Civil Aviation Organization says it has amended rules governing the transportation of dangerous goods to prohibit both passengers and crew from putting e-cigarettes and other battery-powered portable electronic smoking devices in checked bags. The change also bars recharging the devices in aircraft cabins,” according to the Canadian Press.

The ban is expected to go into effect in early November.

Why the Ban on E-Cigs?

There have been a number of issues with e-cigarettes and vaporizers causing fires on flights, enough for airlines to impose the ban. “There have been at least 26 incidents since 2009 in which e-cigarettes have caused explosions or fires, including several in which the devices were packed in luggage, according to the Department of Transportation. Usually, they have been accidentally left on or the battery short-circuits,” says Jessica Plautz on Mashable.

What causes the fires?

  • People forgetting to turn off their e-cig
  • Luggage shifting, causing e-cigs to turn on during flights
  • Batteries shorting out

“We know from recent incidents that e-cigarettes in checked bags can catch fire during transport,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a statement. “Fire hazards in flight are particularly dangerous. Banning e-cigarettes from checked bags is a prudent safety measure.”

Rules for Flying with E-Cigs in Canada

According to the Government of Canada, here are the rules for travelling with e-cigarettes on flights:

“You can bring e-cigarettes for your personal use in your carry-on baggage or on your person. Spare batteries must be protected so they won’t short-circuit. You are not allowed to recharge the e-cigarettes and/or batteries while you are on board the aircraft.”

Air Canada and WestJet have banned e-cigarettes in checked bags for some time, so the changes in the U.S. is nothing new to Canadian travellers. However, it is a good reminder to be extra diligent and make sure your e-cig batteries are disconnected and your device is turned off, even when in your carry-on luggage. Bags can shift in overhead compartments, and your e-cig could turn on accidentally.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Plus, your e-cig will only be an arm’s length away and easily accessible once you get off the flight.

vaping side effects

We asked some of our blog readers to let us know if they’ve observed any side effects from e-cig usage. We also told them not to hold back – to tell us what they really think!

Vaping Side Effects

Before we get to some of their responses, here are some of the most commonly reported side effects of e-cigarettes.

  1. Coughing is common, especially for newbies who are using a powerful device.
  2. Sore throat has also been reported and is likely due to the e-juice ingredient propylene glycol.
  3. Vape fatigue or vaper’s tongue refers to losing your liking of a certain e-juice flavour, or worse, losing your taste for almost all food and drink. There are a couple of possible causes for this affliction including vaping the same flavour for too long or injured taste buds due to illness, smoking cigarettes, burns or a head cold. Some medications cause it, as well as a dirty atomizer or stale e-juice.

Now on to our readers – here’s what they had to report about e-cigarette side effects.

  1. “I LOVE vaping! My side effects are all positive. I can smell flowers and fresh cut grass, my food tastes better, and I smell better too.”
  2. “E-cigarettes can still make me cough if I’m not careful enough and if I don’t remember to do a long slow inhale instead of a quick cigarette gulp. I still love the real thing (sigh), but vaping gets me through the times I can’t.”
  3. “I had headaches when I first started vaping, but then I realized they were probably due to  quitting tobacco cigarettes cold turkey. The headaches went away after about a week and I haven’t looked back. I’ve been tobacco cigarette-free for almost three years!”
  4. “Sometimes when I vape I get a dry mouth, but it’s never bad enough to stop me.  A nice cold drink does the fix trick, and if it’s a beer, its even better!”

Overall, tobacco smokers who switch to vaping have suggested they enjoy an abundance of positive side effects, including health benefits, a better sense of taste and smell, improved lung function, and most importantly, cutting their risk of dying of tobacco-induced cancers to near zero.

How about you? What vaping side effects have you experienced? Tell us in the comments below!

anything made of chocolate is good for you

National Chocolate Day is celebrated on October 28 every year. Most people love this delicious food made from “the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree.”

Cacao, which has been cultivated for at least three millennia, is grown in Mexico, Central America and Northern South America. The earliest known documentation of using cacao seeds is from around 1100 BC. The cacao tree seeds have a very intense, bitter taste that must be fermented to develop the flavor.

It seems that eating dark chocolate has many health benefits, including better blood circulation, growth of good bacteria in the gut, introduction of antioxidants that fight inflammation, and the positive effect of lowering one’s blood pressure.

If you’re a vaping enthusiast and a lover of all things made with chocolate, why not celebrate National Chocolate Day with these six mouth-watering e-juice flavors?

Select a high-nicotine level of 12 mg or 18 mg per ml for this particular flavor, and make sure you have a proportionate ratio of 70% of VG to 30% of PG in the e-liquid, to make your vaping experience as closely similar to smoking a hand-rolled cigar or cigarette in real life as possible. For a very mild tobacco taste in every vape, choose an e-juice with either 3 mg or 6 mg of nicotine per ml in a bottle.

Upgrade your supply of your favorite e-juice from a standard size of 10 ml or 30 ml to a large 140 ml bottle that will probably last you anywhere from two to four weeks.

Big Cigarette BoxWe’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again … Britain gets it!

According to a recent article in Fortune magazine, Public Health England has publicly endorsed e-cigarettes as “an efficient and desirable way to reduce the health risks from smoking tobacco and to encourage tobacco users to kick the habit entirely.” It went on to say that a study by impartial health experts found e-cigarettes to be about 95% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes, and that current popular misconceptions that e-cigs are as harmful as, or are an introduction to tobacco smoking amongst youth are just plain wrong.

Wow … why can’t Canada and the USA  get it too?

On the other side of the coin, the World Health Organization recently stated that the safety of e-cigarettes ‘has not been scientifically demonstrated.’ Say what? Is the WHO actually implying that even though we have scientific proof that tobacco is a killing machine, it’s not sure if e-cigs might be a safer bet?

WHO – have you read the evidence written by Peter Hajek, a professor at Queen Mary University, London? If not, let us enlighten you. He said, and we quote, “Tobacco smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks tobacco smoking poses to their health.” Without a doubt this is one of the most important official endorsements yet for vaping, and judging by the rate at which UK tobacco smokers are ditching tobacco cigarettes for e-cigs, they get it. The tobacco giants most definitely get it too, as they continue to snatch up e-cigarette manufacturers as an insurance policy to the inevitable decline of their traditional products.

But wait … there’s more!

Public Health England didn’t stop there. They are now proposing the provision of free e-cigarettes to those who sign up for the National Health’s Stop Smoking services, realizing that the cost of this program would be more than offset by the return on investment, as tobacco-related diseases are still the #1 killer in the UK.

The Brits are so civilized.

ecigarette case While it’s obvious to most people why the popularity of the e-cigarette has soared in the past few years, there are a few other reasons vapers, both young and old, love their e-cigs. Not only are e-cigarettes less harmful to your health than tobacco cigarettes (more about that later), they can be downright fun!

Vaping is creative

Let’s start with the flavours! Fruit, candy, bakery and dessert, soda pop and liquor – name your fave and there’s a flave for you. Strawberry Banana Crème or Watermelon, Black Licorice or Chocolate Mint, Apple Pie or Vanilla Sugar Cookie, Mountain Dew, Absinthe or Buttered Rum – there are literally thousands of flavours you can create by mixing e-juices yourself.

Vaping is fashionable

We can’t tell you how many customers tell us that next to the health aspect of vaping versus tobacco smoking, they love the ability to switch up their casings at a moment’s notice. Most choose solid colours for daytime, particularly black if they want to be discreet. But more and more are choosing colours to match their work attire, and fun and fabulous cartridges for a night out at the bar, or sleekly sophisticated clearomizers for a more formal occasion.  Choose fish or florals, stripes or dots – the possibilities are limitless. And … wait for it … we have a client who bedazzled hers for her daughter’s wedding!

Vaping is a healthier choice

Let’s go back to the health issue.  Why the powers that be refuse to recognize the positive health benefits of vaping versus tobacco smoking doesn’t really baffle us. Government and Big Pharma are in it together throwing shade on the e-cig industry. And it’s obvious electronic cigarettes are safer and cleaner for the environment.

Can you imagine winter streets not lined with cigarette smokers huddled in doorways (to say nothing of the tobacco cloud you’re forced to walk through to enter the building), or summer parks and roads not littered with empty cigarette packs and butts? We can!

Apollo Greek Yogurt Granola

Apollo by Yogen Fog

This e-juice flavor is a lovely blend of Greek yogurt and healthy granola. There are more e-juice flavors out there that use a variety of nuts as their main flavoring ingredients. Be wary of vaping e-juice flavors with ingredients that may cause allergic reactions in you or someone you know. Most e-juice bottles have warning labels regarding the presence of allergens in the flavored liquid.

Pretty soon October will end, but before that happens, everybody will be celebrating Halloween with lots of candies and desserts, pumpkin pies, spiced beverages, and many more. Here are ten ejuice flavors that will make your All Hallow’s Eve celebration a memorable event.

grinch smokingYou can vape in a car,  you can vape in a bar

You can vape in the rain, but not on a train …

Where exactly can you vape these days? And for that matter, where exactly can’t you vape? Starting with where you’d most like to be able to vape, we’re finding in our town we can vape in most bars and on their patios. These ‘locals’ are mid- to upper-level chain establishments who wisely know their customer base will spend their dollars where they can vape.

We’ve never tested the interior restaurant area – we just wouldn’t. But when we’re seated at the bar or out on the patio, vaping has never been an issue. A fellow vaper tells us that her doctor’s office is vape-friendly. This doc gets it – she says, and we quote, “vaping is the gateway to a smoke and tobacco-free lifestyle. “ Amen, Doc!

Where can’t you vape?

Almost everywhere you can’t smoke, including inside public buildings, malls and schools, and on public transportation including planes, trains and buses. Public parks and soccer fields are now mostly smoke-free zones and at this moment we don’t have any concrete evidence as to whether vaping there is also frowned upon or not.

Where can you vape?

On a lighter note, we recently heard of one place you can vape and it’s one we had never remotely considered – the forest.  A friend is preparing for hunting season and asked us to recommend an e-cigarette for a novice. He also wondered which e-juice flavours we thought would be most attractive to the deer.

We warned him to stay away from the liquor-flavoured e-liquids, like Red Wine, as venison is often braised in vino, or sherry or bourbon, and that could be off-putting to some deer. We advised him to choose Green Apple or Carrot Cake e-juice for obvious reasons. (You can’t make this stuff up, folks.)

Do you have any anecdotal info regarding vaping in public parks or on soccer pitches? Let us know!

According to the Slim Vape Pen blog, “a bottom coil clearomizer, also known as a bottom feed clearomizer, or bottom feeders, is a clearomizer that has the atomizer (heating coil) at the bottom of the tank.

Meanwhile, Quit Smoking Community has published a guide into clearomizers, cartomizers and atomizers that described a bottom coil type as “a clearomizer with a bottom coil, has great wicking, and the vapor quality is excellent. And it produces a very cool vapor, which is great if that is what you prefer. You won’t have to worry about the vapor burning your throat.

If you’re like most vapers, you’d have bought personal vaporizers equipped with either a top coil or bottom coil atomizers. The choice on whether a bottom coil tank atomizer is a better option than a top coil depends on your needs at the moment. Refer to this bulleted comparison between top coil and bottom coil atomizers for an overview:

Top Coil vs Bottom Coil Clearomizers

If you’re looking for a good bottom coil clearomizer to start vaping with, then choose a Mini Kanger Protank 2 or a Kanger EVOD for starters. When you hit a snag with a Kanger, try some other brand until you found one that gives you a smooth vaping experience. Here are some suggestions from the Vapor Jedi gallery.

eleaf bcc gt ego clearomizer black

Eleaf BCC GT Ego Clearomizer (Black) via VaporJedi

Eleaf BCC-GT Bottom Coil Glass Clearomizer with 1.6 ml Tank

This stainless steel clearomizer has a newly designed dual bottom coil. The Pyrex glass tank ensures clean flavor and eliminates the risk of plastic leeching into your liquid. The new dual coil head provides incredible vapor production and flavor. The tip of the Eleaf BCC-GT is removable and can be replaced with most 510 trip tips.

It’s available in seven colors. The BCC-GT mouthpiece is pluggable.

The BDC atomizer head offers two values of coil resistance: acquiescent 1.8 ohm and alternative 1.6 ohm. Because of this, it’s expected that the BCC-GT atomizer will vaporize more thoroughly compared to other types of atomizers. Other features include:

* eGo threading connection
* Removable 510 drip tip
* Bottom filling and heating

Aspire Nautilus Mini 2 BVC tank

Aspire Nautilus Mini 2 with BVC tank via VaporJedi

Nautilus Mini BVC Clearomizer by Aspire

The Nautilus Mini is made of stainless steel and Pyrex glass, and it uses the Aspire BVC (Bottom Vertical Coil) atomizer technology. It’s designed to last longer and provide the purest and cleanest taste from e-liquids. Its main feature is an improved four-port adjustable airflow system, which allows the user to adjust the draw, warmth of vapor, and amount of vapor produced. Other features of this clearomizer include:

* one 2ml Nautilus Mini Tank (1.8 ohm BVC atomizer pre-installed)
* one replacement BVC atomizer (1.8 ohm)
* an eGo threaded cone
* a user manual

How to Take Care of Your Bottom Coil Atomizer

In general, a coil head or clearomizer may last anywhere from 3 to 14 days. You may extend the life of your clearo when you know how to keep your hardware in tip-top condition. According to this Reddit post, fruity e-juice flavors leave behind residue on the coils more than any other type of nicotine-containing liquid. The person who posted that message also provided a few insights into using bottom coil clearomizers:

1. Fruity flavors usually gunk them up pretty quickly. I can go for a week or so with a pure (as in simple) tobacco juice and no funky taste, no taste changes, nothing. If I use anything sweet, I need to clean it up after about 10 ml (~4 refills).

2. If the liquid goes below 1.3-1.5 ml, it will gurgle. And not the mild type of gurgle that goes away if you do 3, the one that goes away only if you fill it up again.

3. If it gurgles after a refill or because of condensation (vaping in cold weather, bringing it back in the house, etc..) DO NOT remove the clearomizer and blow through the tip! This will totally mess it up and you will need to take it apart and clean it. What you need to do is either (a)blow through the bottom or (b)(preferably) take a couple of short drags without activating the battery. This will take care of it.

4. I usually vape them at around 3.7-4.2 volts. If it starts to taste funky, I found that a temporary solution (if you’re at work or something and you don’t have a spare or can’t clean it) is to dial up to a higher voltage (in my case 4.8 – twist) and do a couple of long drags without inhaling it. This kinda clears up the gunk for about two-three hours.

5. If it starts to consistently taste bad/burnt, changing coils doesn’t do much unless you clean the whole clearomizer and discard the juice.

6. Cleaning them with isopropyl alcohol works really really well. I have one (I call it The Invincible) that I’ve been using for a month now (same body, same coil) and was cleaned three times, changed juices at every cleansing, with blackberry then RY4 then banana nut bread. Still going strong.

7. If you leave them filled on the desk for a couple of days, they will gurgle. Applying 3.(b) solves it.

8. Another thing about condensation. If you want to fill it and tip it over, use a napkin at the drip tip otherwise you’ll have a surprise juice discharge in your hands.

It’s not just leftover gunk that may cause you to draw dry hits from a bottom coil atomizer. It may be the thickness of your juice, wick size and vaping voltage, among others. The PUCK E-cig Mods blog has identified the issue:

As you draw on the mouth piece of a bottom coil atomizer (BCC for short), you are sucking out the juice from the tank basically into the atomizer wick holes. As you deplete the juice in the tank, you are creating a vacuum above the liquid. The more liquid you use up, the more vacuum you create in the tank above the juice. This vacuum wants to keep the juice in the tank and not let it go out through the atomizer wick holes. What happens next, a dry drag into your throat.

That’s the reason why many bottom coil clearos have multi-port airflow systems. A few vapers have suggested drilling into the microscopic holes to widen them, but this can cause juice to leak out if you’re not careful with your modifications.

vape on signIt’s official – Ontario has introduced sweeping new legislation that restricts who can buy and where they can vape electronic cigarettes – Bill 45. Brought to you by Liberal member the Hon. Dipika Damerla, Associate Minister of Health and Long-Term Care (Long-Term Care and Wellness), this bill has received Royal Assent and will kick in January 1, 2016.

Bill 45 treats e-cigs the same as tobacco cigarettes, bans the sale of flavoured tobacco products including menthol cigarettes, imposes a total ban on e-cigarette sales to youth under the age of 19, and bans their use in restaurants and public places.

Damerla said, “The evidence shows if young kids see people smoking or vaping, they are likely to take up smoking or vaping.”

“Until we have the evidence as to how bad or what the evidence is on electronic cigarettes, all we’re saying is let’s not get our kids started on this,” she added. “Even though e-cigarettes do not produce second-hand smoke, they still send the wrong message to teens.” Damerla claims the restaurant and hotel industries asked for regulations on e-cigarettes so they don’t have to argue with customers who aren’t clear on the rules, and noted about 43 American states and the province of Nova Scotia have already regulated e-cigarettes in some way.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says more research is needed before completely banning e-cigarettes, so if we are to assume that the Wynne government is now conducting such research, we’re probably safe in wondering if a ban on e-cigarettes can’t be far behind.

NDP health critic France Gelinas offered this pearl of wisdom “Every month that goes by, more and more youth pick up smoking by experimenting with e-cigarettes and then making the switch.” Oh come on, France! We don’t have a problem with banning the sale of e-cigs and e-juice to persons under the age of 19 – in fact, we in the industry have, for the most part, self-regulated on this issue.

And we can understand The Canadian Cancer Society’s take on the banning of flavoured and menthol tobacco as “a giant step forward in protecting the health of Ontario youth and preventing cancer.” But a complete ban on e-cigarettes?  The Progressive Conservatives said it best – the Liberals are great at banning things, but should take more concrete steps to lower tobacco smoking rates!

What to do? Contact your local MPP’s office and respectfully voice your opinion on e-cigarette legislation.
